Write the Presentation Right

I must give a presentation on topic XYZ so I’ll open up PowerPoint and create a title page called “XYZ”, I’ll even put my name and company and date on there as well. Then I’ll add a slide that tells them I’ll be addressing points A, B and C. Now I’ll create a couple of pages for each of the three points (A, B, and C) and put my bullet points (sentences really) on those. I’ll get cute and make each one come onto the screen a different way, that’ll be a hoot. Next, a slide for the summary (easy, just copy the second slide I created) and then a slide with “Question Time” so they’ll know it’s time to ask questions. Finally I’ll make a ‘sign-off’ slide (so simple, just copy the first slide!)… Then you pat yourself on the back because you have single handily written your presentation, created an accompanying slideshow, generated your speech notes and as luck would have it, you can print the slideshow off (3 slides to a sheet with some pretty black lines to the side for audience notes) and give them out as handouts to the audience. “Ta-da”.

The bad news is you’ve just created a mind numbing presentation. The good news is that 99.x% of presenters do the same thing. But what if you did it differently?
